Your Southern Tanzania Holiday covers Selous, Mikumi, Udzungwa mountains and Zanzibar. The rich mix of wildlife, waterfalls, lush green forest and palmfringed beaches will make this trip the perfect Tanzania holiday. I say yes but can you please modify the itinerary a little?
You will be met at the International Airport of Dar Es Salaam by your Driver/Guide. We will take you to your hotel in Dar Es Salaam for overnight before you start your southern Tanzania Zanzibar tour.
Overnight at Accomondia Hotel (depending on your arrival time).
Your guide will come to pick you up at your hotel in the morning and take you to the Selous Game Reserve which you reach in the afternoon (traveling time some 6-7 hours). After reaching at your lodge and some short rest you will explore the river bank of Rujiji River by walk.
Overnight at Selous Great Water Lodge. All meals included.
Today you will visit SelousGame Reserve named after the explorer Frederick Selous. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected wildlife reserve, a UN World Heritage site and a pristine uninhabited area larger than Switzerland.
The topography of the park varies from rolling savannah woodland, grassland plain and rocky outcrops cut by the Rufiji River and its tributaries. The morning is spent on game viewing around the park.
After lunch at the banks of the river your boat will pick you up and take you on a long river cruise along Rujiji River, across some of the lakes and through small channels at this huge lagoon system inhabited by crocodiles, hippos, monkey and plenty of birds (this river cruise takes some 4-5 hours and differs significantly from the ‘usual’ 1-1,5 hour boat trips at the river).
Reach your lodge perched high above the river banks with the last afternoon light – just in time for a sundowner and some rest before the dinner.
Overnight at Selous Great Water Lodge. All meals included.
After breakfast you will proceed to the next station of your safari circuit. First you cross a vast part of Northern Selous on some bumpy partly dusty roads towards Morogoro and onwards to MikumiNational Park where you reach your lodge in the afternoon. After a short rest you go on an afternoon game drive at Mikumi.
Overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp. All meals included.
Today you explore MIkumi on a full day safari. The Mikumi National Park obtains a good impression of the African animal world and is suitable very well for a short visit.
There is a rich variety bird species as well as large numbers of giraffes, buffaloes and elephants and close to the water holes also lions, leopards and hippos.
Furthermore you can see zebras, lions, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and other antelopes. Several observation towers enable you to overview the park in its entirety.
Mikumi National Park is mostly miombo woodland with gently rolling hills. Your guide will also arrange a walking safari for you guided by an armed ranger.
Overnight at Mikumi Wildlife Camp . All meals included.
Early departure for Udzungwa Mountain National Park which you reach after some 1,5-2 hours drive. After reaching your campsite you go for a first day of hiking at the pristine rain forest.
Today you do the Sanje Hike the most popular trail in Udzungwa taking you up to Sanje Waterfall. This 200m waterfall is very impressive surrounded by rainforest with excellent views over the Kilombero floodplain. At the top, there are two more waterfalls, both impressive, and you can swim in the cool waters of their plunge pools.
This trek can be done by an enthusiastic hiker in half a day, heading quickly up the escarpment and back down again. We usually recommend a more leisurely approach, heading up the mountain in the morning, taking lunch on the top of the waterfall with its breath-taking views of the valley, and taking time out to swim during the heat of the day. Then you can follow the trail around the side of the escarpment and head back down the mountainside.
Today your guide will take you to the Hidden Waterfall Trail taking you to Njokamoni Waterfall, right back into Hondo Hondo. It’s a long, steep walk that climbs to over 1000m, so you should plan to leave early.
It is necessary to take a ranger on this hike as there are large mammals deep in the forest. You will certainly see plenty of wildlife on this trail. Once you’ve climbed the sometimes steep trail to the ridge, you walk through the flat grassy bottoms of some beautiful hidden valleys (hence our name for the trail) often frequented by elephants.
NB- this is a moderately tough hiking tour which takes some 7-8 hours for some 15 km. If you like a ‘lighter’ version your guide will take you across the road via the friendly local town of Mwaya towards a Rubber Plantation where you can see how local Latex is produced (this excursion can take some 4-5 hours)
Early rise for your last breakfast before you return to Dar es Salaam by car and onwards to Zanzibarby flight at 18:15. After arrival your guide will take you to your Zanzibar Beach Resort – The Zanzibari Hotel for overnight at. All meals included.
Relax and enjoy in a peaceful and tranquil setting, surrounded by beautiful gardens, home to exotic plants, palm trees and even some baobab tree.
